MailTo Protocol

Most Email programs will define specific attributes with which they are to be associated:
  • The file extensions (such as .eml, .msg and .vcf) that will open the program.
  • Various protocols(such as MailTo).
  • Various Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) commands (such as Send Mail).
These attributes are set-up when the Email program is installed, and the default Email program should have at least the file extensions and the MailTo protocol defined.

If MailTo is not defined, any attempt to use it to open a new Email message will fail. In this case, you need to check what attributes have been set for your default Email program. In Windows Vista and later, do the following:
  • Press the Windows Logo key (the one with the 4 pane window to the bottom left of the keyboard) to display the Start Menu.
  • Click on the Control Panel link on the right of the Start menu to open the Control Panel window.
  • Click on the Default Programs item to open the Default Programs window.
  • Click on the Set your default programs link to open the Set Default Programs window.
  • Click on your default Email program in the left hand pane of the window. This should display information relating to the program in the right hand pane of the window.
  • Even if the right hand pane says This program has all its defaults, you might want to check that MailTo is one of the defaults, so click on the Choose Defaults for this program link at the bottom of the pane to open the Set Program Associations window.
  • You should see MailTo in the list under Protocols and it should be ticked. If not, tick the check box and then click on the Save button. This will return you to the previous window.
  • Click on the OK button, which will return you to the Default Programs window. You can close this window by clicking on the window close button at the top right of the window.
Now try the AllIncontext Contact page link again. If a new message window does not open, contact the person or organization supporting your Email program and PC. You can see what the link does by placing the mouse over the link and reading the link text from the Status Bar at the bottom of the browser window (for example, in Internet Explorer, if the StatusBar is not visible, use the View menu to tick it on).
